About us:

We had been organizing various sorts of events, mainly on the roads.  As we started holding small running events on the trails we realized the potential for larger events and started focussing on what it would take to build new and exciting events that we would like to participate in ourselves.  We quickly learned the interest was there; folks who had run and ridden trails in the past wanted to gage their ability against others.  People who had never stepped foot in the woods wanted to see what it was all about.  Well, there it was, the venue and the audience and, viola, Trail Events is born.

It's been a rocky road (excuse the pun).  Cultivating the relationships with the powers that be at the parks and forests (some still need a lot of cultivating, if you know what I mean) was a difficult undertaking.  You don't just put up a flyer saying "hey, there's a trail race here in the park" and have folks show up.  No, no.  The Superintendent in that park will kick you out of there faster than Richard Simmons at a motorcycle rally.  There are permits and insurance and fees and rules and paperwork and more paperwork.  It's a wonder any events ever take place in parks before the organizer dies of old age.

Anyway, some places work out better than others and it's usually a win win situation for the organizer and the park.  We'll never get rich doing this, but man, do we love doing it.  We've met so many great people and made so many friends that we'd probably do it for free (which is sometimes the case) if we had to.

We hope more than anything that you enjoy the events we put on.  We certainly enjoy having you there.

Stuff

Homemade Energy Bars

-Kathy Johnson

1 c. uncooked oats
1/2 c. wheat bran
1/2 c. oat bran
1 c. crunchy peanut butter
2 T. margarine (I use soy margarine)
1/2 c. protein powder (I use soy)
1 c. raisins
1 c. coconut
1 c. chocolate chips
1 c. light color Karo syrup

I mush it all up with my hands and smash it onto a sheet of wax paper set on a cookie sheet. Then I put it in the freezer for an hour or so just so it gets set up a bit. I then cut it into bars and put them in baggies. As you can see, I put basically a cup of anything that doesn't move into these things and I think they're great. My husband keeps stealing them from the fridge so I have to watch or they're all gone before I know it. This recipe makes quite a few-can't remember how many-at least 15 I would guess. I cut them about 2x3" or so.

They only take about 5 minutes to throw together. I prefer to do this instead of spending $1.25 on each one at the store. I think the ingredients are similar but there are no additional vitamin/mineral supplements or anything great like that.

Can be cut into 15-20 bars depending on the size you like. You can do the math for each bar based on the servings you get.
