A gentleman rambles to a course record at the 2008 Ramble

The Ramble started off on a shaky step on race morning with my paramedic contacting me at 5:37AM informing me that he was very ill and had spent the night in the hospital, meaning he wouldn't make it to the event.  There was really nothing to do at that late time other than move forward with the event and utilize EMS if needed.

The weather was perfect with early morning temps in the 50's with a high expected in the mid 70's, and low humidity.  The parking situation is a bit of a hassle and I was prepared for grumbling from participants.  Next year I'm redesigning the course which will result in 1. a tougher course, 2. a longer course, and 3. eliminate the long walk to and from the cars.

With the high participation numbers, registration got clogged up a bit (another opportunity to fix something for next year), and we got started a little late.  I was sad to see the number "1" bib still resting atop the pile of other bibs, which meant that the defending champion, Paul Potori, was not racing.  I don't think it would've mattered other than for the race for a podium placement.  From the start, Robert Marchinko broke to the front and lead the entire way.  When I say led, I mean he ran away from the field and steadily increased his lead throughout the race.  It was difficult to follow him in full stride coming through the start/finish area at the transition to the Keyauwee Trail.  The excitement grew as Robert came charging down Wood Run Rd. and headed out to the turn around cone and back to the finish in a course record 1:12:49.  Second place went to another trail running newcomer, Aaron Linz, with third place going to Georgia resident, Jeremy Duncan.  As a true champion, Robert waited around for every person to finish and for the awards ceremony when he had family obligations.  It was an honor having such a great athlete and person at the event.

The women's race was more tightly contested and exciting.  The lead changed during the race with the always fit, Tracy Sproule taking the prize, with Caroine Veronee coming in 20 seconds later, and the young upstart, Boriana Bakaltcheva, taking third.  Defending champion, Shenna Kevorkian, came in a very respectable fourth place.

In the 8k race, Southen speedster, Sam Fernandez took first overall.  On the women's side, Erin Cox took home first.

DJ Kenny Spence spun the tunes for us all morning.
